Crafted for Lexus: Tamaki Niime’s soft shawls
Woven using only natural cotton or wool fibres, Tamaki Niime’s eponymous shawls are produced in her studio in Nishiwaki, a city in the geographical centre of Japan famous for banshu-ori, the traditional art of textile manufacturing.
Aiming for ultimate comfort, Niime spent many years perfecting the quality and structure of the fibres within her shawls, as well as the specific speed and density of the weave. The result is a soft feel that is extremely gentle on the skin. Lighter, all-cotton shawls feature in the spring/summer collection, while a luxurious wool and cotton blend features in the autumn/winter collection.
Niime’s hero product for the Crafted for Lexus collection is the Only One Shawl, each being unique and individually created on her vintage, 1965 power loom (above). Alternatively, the more affordable Roots Shawl is produced in sets using similar techniques, yet on a faster and more efficient rapier power loom.
