Algorithmic Lace wins the Lexus Design Award 2019

Lexus has announced the Grand Prix winner in the Lexus Design Award 2019. Lisa Marks has received the award for Algorithmic Lace, a design for a confidence-inspiring bra for women who have undergone mastectomy surgery. She takes the ultimate prize in a competition that attracted 1,548 entries from designers in 65 countries across the globe.

The prototypes make creative use of technology in practical design concepts that have the power to change lives

First launched in 2013, the annual Lexus Design Award demonstrates our commitment to supporting and nurturing the next generation of designers, creatives who share our belief in the power of design and innovation to shape a brighter future. The prototypes produced by all of this year’s finalists make creative use of technology in practical design concepts that have the power to change lives.

Internationally acclaimed designer and technologist John Maeda (below, with Lisa), a new member of the judging panel this year, commented: “When we think of algorithms, we usually think of computers and high-tech industry. But the textile industry is where algorithms were first deployed as means to realise new aesthetic choices in fabrics during the 19th century.

“Lisa Marks’s Algorithmic Lace project not only feeds on that rich history, it goes even further back in time to incorporate a 16th century technique for weaving complex lace patterns. Marks uses this ancient process together with advanced three-dimensional modelling to hand-craft bespoke bras for breast cancer survivors who have undergone mastectomy surgery. The result is a combination of function and beauty that positively impacts the survivor’s body aesthetic while also providing fully customized structural comfort.”

Grand Prix winner Lisa Marks said:  “Lexus doesn’t have to do this (award); they could be a successful brand without it. But it shows their commitment to design and to a better world.”

The Grand Prix-winning prototype and those created by the other five Lexus Design Award 2019 finalists are on display at the Lexus exhibition Leading with Light, from 9-13 April at Superstudio Più in Milan’s Tortuna district, the hub of Milan Design Week.

Lexus: Leading with Light

Inspired by Lexus’s latest illumination technology, Leading with Light is an immersive experience that connects with human emotions.  It combines playful and dynamic lighting with human dance and advanced robotics, using numerous beams of light as robots interact with the movements of a single performer.

Visitors then proceed to Lexus Lights Tomorrow to discover how Lexus’s approach to cutting-edge vehicle lighting technology can lead to a better and brighter future.
