Self-charging hybrid: six benefits of driving the Lexus UX

1. Dynamic advantage

Available in either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations (see above image), the UX can handle the rough as well as the smooth. What’s more, the battery is located centrally and beneath the rear bench to minimise load space intrusion and enhance the vehicle’s already low centre of gravity.

2. Electric Vehicle (EV) mode

When cruising, braking or decelerating, the electric motor/s automatically kicks in with power supplied by the hybrid battery to enable EV mode. Under these conditions, the UX remains almost silent, using no petrol and producing zero emissions.

3. Smooth combinations

If driving conditions demand greater power, the petrol engine quietly engages while still receiving assistance from the electric motor/s when required. This smooth, almost imperceptible distribution between power sources provides excellent refinement together with low fuel consumption and emissions.

4. Rapid acceleration

When accelerating, the power of the electric motor/s instantly supplements the output of the 2.0-litre petrol engine. Together they deliver a potent surge of torque that delivers linear acceleration precisely when needed.

5. No need to plug-in

The self-charging hybrid Lexus UX 250h recharges its battery through regenerative braking, not as a result of being connected to the mains. During normal driving, regenerative braking captures kinetic energy that would otherwise be lost and turns it into electricity that is stored in the hybrid battery. This automatic generation of ‘free’ energy not only occurs when applying the brake but when the driver lifts their foot off the accelerator pedal.

6. Low cost of ownership

There are a number of ways in which the self-charging hybrid Lexus UX 250h will save you money throughout ownership.

First, it has been designed without a clutch, while traditional ancillaries such as the starter motor and alternator have been integrated into the hybrid system. They require no servicing or replacement over the life of the vehicle. Similarly, the conventional timing belt has been replaced with a maintenance-free timing chain.

In everyday use, initial stopping force is delivered through regenerative braking, which significantly reduces wear in the brake pads and discs. The linear power delivery of the hybrid system and the balanced positioning of the components between the axles serve to reduce tyre wear.

Since the launch of the first hybrid model – the RX 400h in 2005 – our hybrid batteries have accumulated a reliability provenance of some 37 billion miles. Each battery is designed to last the entire life of the car. But for additional peace of mind, all components within the hybrid system are covered by a five-year or 60,000-mile warranty.

Rounding out the savings, high residual values for owners and low Benefit In Kind prices (from 23%) for company car drivers ensure the Lexus UX 250h remains easier on the wallet than its competitors.
