2019 Lexus UX review: what the press say

2019 Lexus UX review

The Lexus UX is our new, urban-focused SUV. Infused with a dynamic attitude, it is engineered to deliver a quick and engaging driving experience with a Lexus-smooth demeanour. Below are direct quotations from independent road tests written by UK journalists following their first drives in the UX at the recent European launch in Barcelona, Spain. You can read what they said in our 2019 Lexus UX review article.

2019 Lexus UX review: Autocar

“Despite having many rivals… the UX brings something new to the table. It’s a hybrid-only model, plus its many cuts and creases make it distinctly distinctive from the pack.

“[Its drive modes] are helped from the offset by the 181bhp hybrid powertrain, which is gloriously quiet, whether in electric mode or when the 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol [engine] is running. It’s paired with a direct-shift continuously variable transmission and is the best CVT we’ve yet driven.”

2019 Lexus UX review: Auto Express

“The UX will reward keen drivers with tight body control, plenty of grips, sharp steering and a composed ride. Even the standard-fit CVT transmission feels smooth and linear.

“The level of specification is high, including a comprehensive array of active and passive safety devices, and there are three trim levels to choose from. It’s not cheap, but thanks to bold styling, smart interior and impressive level of kit, the UX promises to make quite an entrance.”

Auto Trader

“Dynamically speaking, the UX is the most competitive car Lexus makes, blending a comfortable ride with neat, controlled handling. It’s also very smart inside and – thanks largely to its efficient hybrid system and strong resale values – it promises to be a very shrewd financial investment compared with rivals.

“The quality of the materials and the standard of assembly are just as high as they are in any of the company’s bigger, more expensive cars, making the UX feel every inch the quality product.”

2019 Lexus UX review: Carwow

“You can buy SUVs that are sporty and fun to drive, and you can get SUVs that are comfortable and relaxing – the UX sits somewhere in the middle. You don’t hear much in the way of road, wind or engine noise when you are on the motorway. Yet around town, the car feels nippy, able to dart in and out of traffic.

“You couldn’t call the interior understated. True, it’s beautifully made with expensive-feeling materials and thanks to Lexus’s well-known high standards of craftsmanship, it will still look like new in a decade.”

Top Gear

“In a tax (and social) environment increasingly turning against diesel, the UX hybrid offers a unique solution and silhouette in a crowded segment. For urban-focused drivers seeking low-tax alternatives to conventionally powered cars who don’t want to pay for a PHEV or EV (and their current compromises), this capable hybrid is a compelling choice.

“If cost and eco concerns are paramount, go for the standard front-wheel drive model. If you want more excitement and style, opt for [an all-wheel drive] F Sport.”

2019 Lexus UX review: What Car?

“It’s clearly cut from the same cloth as [the RX and NX], both in its sharp, angular design and its use of hybrid power. The… Lexus UX is an interesting alternative to established premium family SUVs, with distinctive looks and a smooth, comfortable driving experience.”
