The Lexus LF-1 Limitless is our vision of a future flagship crossover. It combines high-performance with unrestrained luxury and innovative technology, wrapped up in an evolutionary Lexus design language rooted in the concept of molten katana.
This design visualisation fuses the organic shapes of liquid metal with the sharp edges of a traditional Japanese sword. It’s as if the LF-1 Limitless aesthetic was captured during the shift from a smooth, flowing mass into a solid, chiselled shape.
Within that brave design concept are many standout features. Here are four examples we think are particularly outstanding.
Brave design #1: comfortable cabin
“This is our vision for a new kind of flagship vehicle that embraces crossover capability without giving up the performance and luxury delivered by today’s top sedans,” said Kevin Hunter, president of the CALTY Design team in charge of creating the vehicle. “The LF-1 Limitless concept incorporates imaginative technology while creating a strong emotional connection by improving the human experience for the driver and passengers.”
Maximum comfort for every passenger was CALTY’s goal for the cabin. The Lexus LF-1 Limitless concept adheres to the Japanese tradition of omotenashi, or hospitality, welcoming all who enter with equal enthusiasm.
The front passenger space is open and spacious, with few controls interrupting the wide, unobstructed dashboard. Those in the back enjoy seats of the same quality as those in front, plus expansive legroom and individual display screens for adjusting the climate control or entertainment options.
Brave design #2: lighting inspired by the night sky
Lighting plays a key role in the look and feel of the interior of the Lexus LF-1 Limitless concept. Engaging the start button initiates a dramatic ambient lighting sequence based on which of the driving modes is engaged.
The door trims also feature tiny perforations that allow indirect light from miniature LEDs to shine and twinkle in a variety of colours. This star-like lighting creates a beautiful movement in the interior that complements the more direct overhead lights.
Brave design #3: spindle grille
Like all current Lexus models, the spindle grille on the LF-1 Limitless concept is a core element of the overall design. Here it has been taken further than ever before, with details that suggest the grille finds its origin at the rear of the vehicle before continuing forward to form the nose.
The grille itself features a three-dimensional design with unique colouring and no chrome; instead, LED lighting is employed around the grille and illuminates to greet the owner. Within the grille, the radiation of the mesh pattern from the central Lexus emblem is designed to be reminiscent of the way metal filings display their attraction to a magnet.
Brave design #4: glass roof
The Lexus LF-1 Limitless challenges traditional crossover SUV proportions and styling. The concept’s long bonnet and powerful stance give it the look of a performance saloon, while maintaining the higher ride height and functionality that have made crossovers the preferred choice for so many of today’s customers.
Using a large glass surface as the roof enhances the appeal of this concept and draws attention to its enticing interior design. Gazing through this panel reveals a realm of imagination and inspiration that is driving the future of the luxury crossover category.
