2016 Lexus RX price and specs revealed

The Lexus RX has always been a pioneer, from pushing forward a global market for premium SUVs to being the first to introduce cleaner and more efficient hybrid power into the segment. The 2016 Lexus RX that will reach Britain’s road in the New Year continues this tradition by offering customers an even greater range of useful, advanced technology features, combined with the hallmark Lexus qualities of striking design, fine craftsmanship and exceptional comfort.

UK customers will have two powertrains to choose from – the established full hybrid system with 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine in the RX 450h and the new Lexus 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit in the RX 200t.

All hybrids will feature E-Four all-wheel drive, while the RX 200t will be offered in front-wheel drive format in the entry-level S model and with all-wheel drive in the higher grade versions.

Equipment highlights

The entry point to the RX 200t line-up is the S grade model, which is available exclusively with front-wheel drive.

Highlights of the equipment specification include dual-zone climate control, rear privacy glass, heated front seats, Lexus Navigation with an eight-inch display screen, a nine-speaker audio system with DAB, reversing camera, LED headlamps, roof rails and dual chrome-tipped exhausts.

This generous specification is matched by the RX 450h SE, which leads off the full hybrid range, with the addition of an auto-dimming rear-view and door mirrors, smooth leather upholstery, eight-way power adjustable heated/ventilated front seats and memory settings for the steering wheel, driver’s seat and door mirrors . Roof rails are not included in the SE specification.

The RX 200t and RX 450h Luxury feature all-wheel drive, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats with memory settings, Lexus Premium Navigation with 12.3-inch display screen and DVD player, 20-inch alloy wheels, power tailgate with “no-touch” opening, “triple-L” LED headlights, wireless smartphone charger, and auto-dimming door mirrors with memory setting.

For added sports appeal and visual impact, both versions of the new RX are available as F Sport models.

The exterior styling is given extra emphasis with an even stronger treatment of the front spindle grille and the addition of F Sport-specific features, including dedicated front and rear bumpers, black door mirror housings, F Sport 20-inch alloys and (on the 200t) twin F Sport rear exhausts.

The F Sport treatment continues in the cabin with F Sport front seats and steering wheel, perforated leather upholstery, drilled aluminium pedals and a specific illumination design for the instrument panel and doors.

As well as a sharper appearance, the F Sport models also benefit from dynamic ride, handling and control features, including Adaptive Variable Suspension, Lexus’s Sport Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system and sports-tuned electric power steering. In other respects the F Sport models share the same impressive equipment list as the Luxury grade, plus low-speed cornering fog lights and sun shades on the rear doors.

Premier grade is exclusive to the RX 450h and delivers a wealth of advanced technology and premium quality features. They include semi-aniline leather upholstery with 10-way power adjustable front seats. Both driver and front passenger seat have memory settings and multi-adjustable, power lumbar support for ultimate comfort.

A colour head-up display, 15-speaker Mark Levinson surround audio system, 360-degree view monitor and a heated steering wheel are also provided and illuminated scuff plates add extra quality detailing. Customers can select their preference of a sunroof or (opening) panoramic roof. In common with the F Sport, the RX 450h Premier is fitted with Adaptive Variable Suspension and low-speed cornering lights.

Colour Head-up Display

Lexus’s colour head-up display is the largest of its kind in the premium SUV market segment. It uses clear graphics in colour to present key data and alerts within the driver’s forward eye-line, so they don’t have to take their attention off the road ahead.

Lexus RX interiorFor the first time in a Lexus, the head-up display includes information on Adaptive Cruise Control, pedestrian warning and Pre-Crash Safety status – elements of the new Lexus Safety System+ (see below). It also provides satellite navigation route guidance, vehicle speed and speed limit information, external temperature display and hybrid system charging status.

The new head-up display is part of the standard specification for the RX 450h Premier and is available as an option for F Sport models.

Lexus Safety System+

All versions of the new RX are equipped with Lexus Safety System+, a suite of active safety and driver assistance features. The package includes Pre-Crash Safety, Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Keep Assist and Automatic High Beam.

On the RX 450h Premier, the Automatic High Beam function is replaced by the more sophisticated Adaptive High Beam system, which automatically adjusts distribution of light from the high beam headlights to avoid dazzling other road users, maintaining a higher level of illumination in night-time driving.

Exterior and interior colours and trims choices

The new RX is available (according to grade) in 11 exterior colours, including new Sonic White, Graphite Black, Copper Brown and Deep Blue shades. F Sport White remains exclusive to F Sport models.

The RX 200t S features black fabric and Tahara leather-effect upholstery with matching black interior trim and carpeting. Smooth leather upholstery is available as an option on this grade and provided as standard on SE and Luxury versions in Black, Topaz Brown or Ivory, with respective black trim or Noble Brown (including the steering wheel, centre console, seatbelts, carpeting, door panels and seatbacks).

The perforated leather upholstery featured as standard on the new RX F Sport is available in White, Black or Dark Rose. Choices for the fine-quality semi-aniline leather provide in Premier models are Ivory, Black, Noble Brown, Rich Cream and Topaz Tan. These are matched with laser-cut wood and aluminium trim details.

2016 Lexus RX dimensions

Overall length (mm) 4,890
Overall width (mm) 1,895
Overall height (mm) 1,690

For the first row of seats, the seating position has been lowered (reduced by 19 mm), allowing for excellent head clearance for both the driver and the front passenger.

On the driver’s side, the position of the steering wheel has been repositioned with the angle of the steering column reduced by two degrees while the steering wheel has been positioned closer to the driver. This design change allows for a comfortable yet more sport-oriented driving position—an attribute that will surely be greatly appreciated by the enthusiast driver.

With an interior space optimised for five passengers, the new RX’s lowered rear floor section helps provide seating position comparable to that of the rear-seat passengers in the flagship Lexus LS saloon. Rear-seat occupants will find that they still have plenty of head room, as they did in the previous-generation model. What’s more, thanks to the new RX’s lengthened wheelbase, rear-seat legroom has grown with no sacrifice of luggage space.

Comparable in size to the outgoing RX, the new model features ample rear cargo space with room enough to fit hefty items, including up to four large suitcases or multiple golf bags. Beneath the rear cargo area floor is a spare tyre with jack and tool storage, or a punctured tyre repair kit and jack and tool storage.
