Black Butterfly in-car control system inspires Milan Design Week installations

Lexus has been an active participant in Milan Design Week for many years. This premiere design event provides an opportunity for us to artistically illustrate our challenge to the status quo within the luxury automotive space, where we create amazing experiences for customers as we push boundaries in both products and services. This year’s cutting-edge, immersive installations explore how future technologies will bring man, machine and mobility closer together, with inspiration being drawn from the Black Butterfly — the dual-interface cockpit control system developed by Lexus for the LF-ZC concept car.

The first installation (lead image) is entitled A-Un, and is designed to interact intuitively with the viewer by combining principles of the Black Butterfly with the traditional Japanese concept of ‘Aun no kokyo‘ — breathing in harmony. Developed by Lexus in collaboration with Tokyo-based creative agency SIX and STUDEO design studio, the installation presents a new dimension in seamless communication between humans and mobility, and captures a spirit of mutual understanding through perfectly synchronised interactions.

The second Lexus installation at Milan Design Week 2025 is entitled Discover Together, and is also designed to express the new possibilities presented by the Black Butterfly cockpit control interfaces. It is produced by up-and-coming talents from Bascule Inc in Japan and the Northeastern University’s design centre in the USA, alongside a homegrown Lexus designer team. Through their original works, the creators will illustrate the memorable experiences that can occur when interacting with this new control system.
