Lexus Design Award 2016: submissions now open

The call for entries has been issued for the Lexus Design Award 2016. The international design competition, established in 2013, aims to support up-and-coming designers and foster new ideas that can make a positive contribution to society.

The theme for this year’s award is “anticipation,” in harmony with Lexus’s efforts to develop products and services by anticipating people’s needs. Applicants are encouraged to submit innovative designs that capture the essence of the theme.

Twelve finalists selected from the entries received will be given the chance to show their ideas to the global design community at Milan Design Week 2016, the world’s largest design exhibition.

Four of these finalists will be chosen to develop a prototype of their concept, supported by internationally renowned design mentors. This year the maximum production budget for each prototype has been increased to three million yen – more than £15,000.

The winning designs will be displayed in the Lexus booth at Milan Design Week, with an ultimate Grand Prix winner selected in a final review by the judges during the show.

The judging panel for 2016 includes curators Paola Antonelli and Aric Chen; architect Toyo Ito; Birgit Lohmann, chief editor of designboom; design commentator Alice Rawsthorn; and Tokuo Fukuichi, President of Lexus International.

The mentoring team features Neri & Hu architect and interdisciplinary designers; product and furniture designer Max Lamb; designer and architect Elena Manferdini; and Daniel Arsham and Alex Mustonen’s collaborative and experimental art and design practice Snarkitecture.

Mark Templin, Executive Vice President Lexus International, said: “This year’s finalists gave amazing presentation at Milan Design Week and helped make the award a great success. Whatever the field of design, we encourage applicants for 2016 to submit their most creative ideas, aligned with our theme of anticipation.”

Entries can be submitted up to October 18. Details of the submission process and more information about the award can be found at
